I am Derrick Spangler based in Floyd, Virginia. I provide professional shearing
services for Sheep, Llamas and Alpacas. I am a Certified Sheep Shearer through ASI and am trained in shearing Llamas
and Alpacas as well as hoof trimming and other animal services that you may request to be administered during shearing time.
I grew up on a family farm in Floyd County,
VA. My role models, my grandparents, raise Registered Angus cattle and my mother and I raise a few club lambs.
Farming has always been, and always will be a part of my life that I am proud of.
I began shearing my own sheep in 4-H for fairs and livestock shows in 1995.
As time went on I found that I loved the sport of it (yes, sheep shearing has been proven to be a sport, the equivalent of
running 2-3 marathons in one 8 hour shift) and decided to go out and shear for my community. In 2006 I put away the
shearing stand and learned the New Zealand method of sheep shearing and in January 2007 went to a Professional Sheep Shearing
School in Colorado.
I graduated from Virginia Western Community
College, Roanoke, VA in May 2008 with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. I currently attend Virginia
Tech and plan to graduate in Fall of 2015 with a B.S. in Animal and Poultry Science and a Minor in Agriculture Economics,
I will now be attending school in the Fall semesters only so I can concentrate on YOU in the Spring, and my education in the
Fall.
I love getting out and learning
new things and believe every tomorrow is a beautiful day to look forward to! God has blessed me with MANY things including
a purdy sturdy back and I look forward to putting it to good use for YOU!
I will be available to come out and setup shearing demonstrations in your area, conduct wool quality
seminars, or help with any program promoting agriculture (for example: 4-H or FFA Clubs) any time throughout the year.
